About Barcelona
Barcelona is much more than the host city of the 1st World Congress on HOW IS THIS FETUS. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a strong track record of hosting top-level scientific congresses.
Strategic location: With an international airport just 20 minutes from the city centre and excellent rail and air connections, Barcelona is easily accessible from across Europe and worldwide.
Taxis: Barcelona has an extensive taxi network, easily recognised by their black-and-yellow colour. Official taxis accept card payments and are regulated by meter. From the airport to the city centre, the journey costs between €30 and €40, depending on traffic. Apps such as Freenow or Cabify are also available to request a taxi or private car service.
Public transport in Barcelona: Barcelona has a modern, efficient and user-friendly public transport system managed by Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB). It is the best way to get around the city quickly and affordably.
Metro: The metro network connects most neighbourhoods and key points of interest. The closest station to Auditori L’Illa is Maria Cristina (L3), just a 5-minute walk away. Operating hours:
- 05:00 to 00:00 (Monday to Thursday)
- 05:00 to 02:00 (Friday)
- 24-hour service on Saturdays
Buses: More than 100 bus routes run across the city with high frequency. There are also night buses (NitBus) operating between 22:30 and 05:00.
Tram: Ideal for travelling to more outlying areas or along Avinguda Diagonal. Lines T1, T2 and T3 stop very close to Auditori L’Illa (stop: L’Illa).
Aerobús (Airport – City Centre): The Aerobús connects Barcelona Airport (El Prat) with the city centre (Plaça Catalunya) in around 30 minutes, with departures every 5–10 minutes.
Tickets and fares: A single ticket costs €2.55, but visitors are advised to use the T-casual (10 journeys) or the Hola Barcelona Travel Card (unlimited travel for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days). All tickets are valid on the metro, bus, tram and local trains within Zone 1. Tickets can be purchased at metro ticket machines, stations, or via official apps (TMB App or Hola Barcelona).
Weather: In November, Barcelona enjoys mild autumn weather. Temperatures typically range between 12°C and 20°C, with occasional rain. We recommend mid-season clothing, a light jacket and an umbrella, just in case.
Electricity and plugs: Electricity in Spain is 230V / 50Hz, and Type F plugs are used (two round pins, European standard). Attendees from outside Europe may need an adaptor.
Medical emergencies: In an emergency, call 112, the EU-wide emergency number. For minor health issues, 24-hour pharmacies are available.
Shopping hours: Shops generally open from 10:00 to 20:00. Many restaurants serve lunch between 13:00 and 15:30, and dinner from 20:00 to 23:00. Barcelona offers a wide range of dining options and nightlife.
Currency and payments: The official currency is the euro (€). Most establishments accept card payments, including Apple Pay and Google Pay. It is advisable to carry some cash for small shops or public transport.
